چکیده
Hwei-yu Chang and Fei-Jann Lin (1995) The interac tion between chrom osomal inversion and recessive lethals in Drosophila albomicans. Zoological Studies 34(1): 47-54. In order to reveal the mechanism for the high heterozygosity of an inversion on the left arm of the second chromosome, In(2L)B ,os, several pure lines were established of Drosophil a albomicans for an esterase dimer locus (Est-F). This locus was shown to be eithe r inside the inversion region, or outside, but closely linked with it. By a chromosome extrac tion procedure, we have found that the Wulai D. albomicans populat ion exhibits high heterozygosity (0.54) of the In(2L)B,Ds and that it also has a high frequency of recessive lethals (0.42), but low allelism. These genetic marker strains not only made the chromosome extract ion possible, but were used to reveal that the Wulai popu lation is at linkage equilibrium, whereas the Chitou popu lation is at linkage disequil ibr ium. A possible mechan ism, accumulat ion of recessive lethals in the presence of a chromosomal inversion in a seasonally fluctu ating population, is proposed to explain the phenomena of high inversion heterozygosity, high lethal ity, and low allelism in the Wulai popu lation.

Genetic damage at specific gene loci in Drosophila with betatron X-rays.
The mutation rate was determined for mature sperm at eight specific gene loci on the third chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster using the low ion density radiations of 22 Mev betatron X-rays. A dose of 3000 rads of betatron X-rays produced a mutation rate of 4.36 X 10(-8) per rad/locus. Among the mutations observed, 66% were recessive lethals and 34% viable when homozygous. Only one of the 24 ...

Chia-Hao Cheng, Ching-Ho Chang, and Hwei-yu Chang (2011) Early-stage evolution of the neo-Y chromosome in Drosophila albomicans. Zoological Studies 50(3): 338-349. Numerous theories have specified that an originally autosomal neo-Y chromosome arm is expected to undergo degenerative evolution. Neosex chromosomes of Drosophila albomicans originated from 2 Robertsonian translocation events, one fo...

By virtue of its considerable genetic versatility , Drosophilk melanogaster may be used to detect, in the entire array of germ cell stages, a wide spectrum of chemically induced genetic alterations, including those with severe or obvious effects, such as dominant lethals, chromosome loss, complete and mosaic translocations, recessive lethals, and "visibles", and nondisjunction, as well as those...
